Learn Thai Verb to Be (1): เป็น /bpen/


There are 3 words for "to be" in Thai, เป็น อยู่ and คือ.

Today we will start with the word "เป็น /bpen/".

Pattern:
Subject + เป็น /bpen/ + Noun or Noun with description

It is used when you want to describe "what the subject is". We use เป็น /bpen/ with:

Relation
For example:
พวกเขาเป็นเพื่อนของเรา /pûak-káo bpen pʉ̂an kͻ̌ͻng rao/ = They are our friends.
เขาเป็นพ่อของฉัน /káo bpen pͻ̂ͻ kͻ̌ͻng chán/ = He is my father.

2. Nationality: คน /kon/ (person) + country
For example:
ฉัน (or ผม) เป็นคนไทย /chán (or pǒm) bpen kon tai/ = I am a Thai person./ I am Thai.
เขาเป็นคนจีน /káo bpen kon jiin/ = He/She is a Chinese person./ He/She is Chinese.

3. Occupation
For example:
ฉันเป็นครู /chán bpen kruu/ = I am a teacher.
ฉันเป็นครูสอนภาษาไทย /chán bpen kruu sͻ̌ͻn paa-sǎa tai/ = I am a Thai language teacher.
เขาเป็นหมอ /káo bpen mͻ̌ͻ/ = He/ She is a doctor.

4. Status/ Description of Someone
For example:
เขาเป็นคนใจดี /káo bpen kon jai-dii/ = He/ She is a kind person.
ทอมเป็นคนรวย /Tom bpen kon ruai= Tom is a rich person.

5. Some Medical Conditions
For example:
เขาเป็นหวัด /káo bpen wàt/= He/ She has a cold.
เขาเป็นเบาหวาน /káo bpen bao-wǎan/ = He/ She has diabetes.
เขาเป็นมะเร็ง /káo bpen má-reng/ = He/ She has cancer.

Nagation: 
Subject + ไม่ได้เป็น /mâi dâi bpen/ + Noun or Noun with description
OR  
Subject + ไม่ใช่ /mâi châi/ + Noun or Noun with description 

Note: The first pattern can be used with every item from no. 1-5, but the second pattern is for no. 1-4 only.

For example:
พวกเขาไม่ใช่เพื่อนของเรา /pûak-káo mâi châi pʉ̂an kͻ̌ͻng rao/ = They are our friends.
เขาไม่ใช่คนจีน /káo mâi châi kon jiin/ = He/She is a Chinese person./ He/She is Chinese.
เขาไม่ใช่หมอ /káo mâi châi mͻ̌ͻ/ = He/ She is a doctor.
ทอมไม่ได้เป็นคนรวย /Tom mâi dâi bpen kon ruai/ = Tom is a rich person.
เขาไม่ได้เป็นมะเร็ง /káo mâi dâi bpen má-reng/ = He/ She has cancer.

 
***Remember, DON'T use เป็น /bpen/ with "name". If you want to tell somebody's name, you need to say "ชื่อ /chʉ̂ʉ/.
For example:
ฉันชื่อแจง /chán chʉ̂ʉ Jɛɛng/ = I am Jang. (I am named Jang.)
ผมชื่อจอห์น /pǒm chʉ̂ʉ John/ = I am John. (I am named John.)
เขาชื่อเอมิลี่ /káo chʉ̂ʉ Emily/ = She is Emily. (She is named Emily.)

There are a few words to say “when” in Thai. Today we will see those words and how they works. 1. เมื่อ /mʉ̂a/ You might see this word in some Thai Learning books saying it means “when”. Of course, it is correct but it is not common in colloquial Thai. เมื่อ /mʉ̂a/ is used in written language. Anyway, you will see เมื่อ in other words to tell the past.
