Learn Thai Phrases | Ask and Give Directions

Err.. Well, I think I am lost! I have a direction problem all the time, so it is nothing new for me. Haha.

In this blog, we will learn how to ask and give directions to help you to get to your destination (and to save my life. LOL)

1. place + อยู่ที่ไหน / yùu tîi-nǎi /= where is + place?
For example:
สถานีรถไฟฟ้าอโศกอยู่ที่ไหน /sà-tǎa-nii rót-fai-fáa à-sòok yùu tîi-nǎi /
= Where is an Asoke sky train station?
OR บีทีเอสอโศกอยูที่ไหน /bii-tii-éet à-sòok yùu tîi-nǎi /
= Where is Asoke BTS?

2. ผม / ฉันจะไป + place + ยังไง /pǒm / chán jà bpai  + place + yang-ngai?/ = How do I get to + place?

For example:
ผม / ฉันจะไปวัดโพธิ์ยังไง /pǒm / chán jà bpai  wát poo yang-ngai?/
= How do I get to Wat Pho?

3. place + ไปทางไหน /place + bpai taang nǎi?/ =Which way do I go to…?
For example:
ธนาคารกรุงเทพไปทางไหน /ta-naa-kaan grung-têep bpai taang nǎi?/
=Which way do I go to Bangkok Bank?

4. ช่วยบอกทางไป + place + ให้หน่อยได้ไหม /chûai bᴐ̀ᴐk taang bpai + place + hâi nᴐ̀i dâi-mái?/
= Can you give me directions to go to + place?

For example:
ช่วยบอกทางไปสนามบินสุวรรณภูมิให้หน่อยได้ไหม /chûai bᴐ̀ᴐk taang bpai sa-nǎam-bin sù-wan-na-puum hâi nᴐ̀ͻi dâi mái?/ = Can you give me directions to go to Suvarnabhumi airport, please?

5. place + อยู่ไกลจากที่นี่ไหม /place + yùu glai jàak tîi-nîi mái?/
= Is + place + far from here?
For example:
โรงแรมเชอราตันอยู่ไกลจากที่นี่ไหม /roong-rɛɛm chǝǝ-raa-dtân yùu glai jàak tîi-nîi mái?/ = Is the Sheraton hotel far from here?

To give directions
ตรงไป / dtrong-bpai / = go straight
เลี้ยวซ้าย / líao sáai / = turn left
เลี้ยวขวา / líao kwǎa / = turn right

ทางขวา / taang-kwǎa / = on the right
ทางซ้าย / taang-sáai / = on the left

ตรงข้าม / dtrong-kâam / = across from, opposite
ข้างๆ / kâang-kâang / = beside, next to
หัวมุม /hǔa mum / = corner
ปากซอย / bpàak sɔɔi / = beginning of the side street
กลางซอย /glaang- sɔɔi / = middle of the side street
สุดซอย / sùt sɔɔi / = end of the side street

For example:

A: พารากอนอยู่ไกลจากที่นี่ไหม /paa-raa-gͻ̂ͻn yùu glai jàak tîi-nîi mái?/
Translation:       Is the Paragon shopping mall far from here?
Translation:       Not far. Walk straight and then turn left at the corner. The mall is on the left.

A: ธนาคารกรุงเทพอยู่ที่ไหนครับ /ta-naa-kaan grung-têep yùu tîi-nǎi kráp?/
Translation:       Where is the Bangkok Bank?
B: ตรงไปประมาณ 300 เมตร ธนาคารกรุงเทพอยู่ปากซอย ทางขวา ตรงข้ามกับร้านกาแฟ /dtrong-bpai bprà-maan sǎam rͻ́ͻi méet. ta-naa-kaan grung-têep yùu bpàak sͻͻi, taang kwǎa, dtrong-kâam gàp ráan gaa-fɛɛ/
Translation:       Go straight for about 300 metre. The bank is at the beginning of the side street, on the right, opposite the coffee shop.
